Yang Shanshen immigrated to Hong Kong in 1930 and learnt Chinese paintings from Gao Jianfu. Yang studied in Japan for three years, returning to Hong Kong in 1938 where he continued to dedicate himself to painting, holding exhibitions around South East Asia in 1940, gaining credence for his works and receiving much praise from overseas Chinese merchants. The current three lots were bought by Mr. Chen Yuk Choy, an entrepreneur from Ipoh who enjoyed the animated quality and symbolism of the paintings, and has kept them for almost 70 years until selling them to the current owner. These paintings are indicative of Yang's early creative years and are as beautiful as they are rare.
