VARIOUS QING ARTISTS (19TH CENTURY)
Calligraphies
A set of four hanging scrolls, ink on paper
Each scroll measures 92 x 18.5 cm. (36 1/4 x 7 1/4 in.)
Calligraphy dedicated to Mr. Xiaoyun by four jinshi graduates: Zhang Zhongxin (?-1913, jinshi degree 1877), Zhu Yizeng (jinshi degree 1866), Lu Runxiang (1841-1915, jinshi degree 1875) and Wang Yiceng (jinshi degree1875), with a total of seven seals of the artists.

NOTE:
These scrolls were written by four men who passed the highest level of the imperial examination system, achieving the prestigious rank of jinshi and subsequently careers as government officials. Lu Runxiang was the most distinguished of the group: he obtained first place in the exams in 1875, held a series of important official posts and finally served as one of the tutors of the last Emperor Pu Yi. All four inscriptions are dedicated to a man identified only by his given name Xiaoyun, and Wang Yizeng's calligraphy is dated to 1877, shortly after all had passed their exams.
