Lot Essay

Theatricality is conveyed in Heri Dono's Contemporary theatre through the depiction of the street theatre performance. In the artist's installation and video works, one always perceives such a tendency. Through his works, Heri Dono deliberately tries to detach art and artistic expressions from the institutional constellation of the art infrastructure. He believes that contemporary art is a part of contemporary culture. For Heri Dono, art is about the artist's sensitivity, which is inseparable from matters of sense and morality. Therefore, artistic expressions bear reflections that are based on socio-cultural issues but within a specific context.

The artist believes that contemporary culture contains traces of ethnicity, signifying how traditions are still pertinent today. At the same time, contemporary culture reflects how globalization make everyday living seems the same everywhere, just as the modernists have predicted. Heri Dono's works never fail to show how the two paradoxical matters collide.
