FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY NABOKOV WITH A SMALL BUTTERFLY DRAWING on the front flyleaf in Russian: "To dear Anyuta from Volodya. 22-XII-1952." The butterfly is executed in red and blue pencil. Véra Nabokov had lived with her cousin Anna Feigen in Berlin for two weeks, until she was married to Vladimir on 15 April 1925. After Anna left for Leipzig, Véra would take her place in the apartment and the Nabokovs would remain on and off in Berlin until they finally left for Paris. In 1939, they dispatched their son Dmitri from Paris to Deauville to remain in comparative safety with Anna Feigen. After they successfully secured her emigration to the U.S., they briefly shared an apartment on the Upper West Side. Vladimir held Anna Feigen in very high regard, even allowing her to prepare the first typescript of Mary, his first novel in 1926, from his fair copy notebooks. She was one of only two people to know that Véra was pregnant in 1934 -- not even Nabokov's mother knew. Juliar A27.1.
