Original japan vellum by Matthew Bell, each cover with gilt prunus blossom design within rectangular border, spine similarly gilt-decorated and gilt-lettered, top edge gilt, others uncut (slight rubbing).
FIRST EDITION. Some of Wilde's best known poems were first published in this collection, many of which had not been published in periodicals. Included are "Helas," "Ave Imperatrix," "Sonnet to Liberty," "Requiscat" and "The Grave of Shelley." SIGNED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR in ink on half title: "Oscar Wilde Jany 1882 Philadelphia." During Wilde's celebrated visit to the U.S., as a lecturer for Major Ponds, he spent some weeks in Philadelphia; where an American edition of his Poems was published in 1881. Mason 304-5.
