PALLADIO, Andrea (1508-1580). The First Book of Andrea Palladio's Architecture. Treating of the Five Orders ... accurately engraved by I. Ware. [London?], 1742.
8o (190 x 123 mm). Etched and engraved frontispiece portrait of Palladio By Isaac Ware after William Kent, 29 engraved plates numbered to 34 (plate nos. I-III and IIII-VII on 2 plates), one engraved illustration, 3 diagrams in the text, and 5 vertical strips of engraved figures illustrating technical terms, all by Ware. Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked, some wear at corners).
This present pocket edition of Palladio's book one, with reduced versions of the plates and produced four years after Isaac Ware's edition of Quatro libri dell'architettura appeared in folio in 1738, may have been intended to provide craftsmen with a cheaper and more portable version of Palladio's section on the five orders of architecture. The absence of an imprint on the title is unusual enough to make Gerard Beasley suggest " that Ware published it himself in a small edition, with the hope of subsequently selling the copyright to the London book trade." BAL/RIBA 2413; Harris 690; Millard British 54.
