"YOU MIGHT BE DEAD, OR WORSE, IN POLITICS"
A particularly jovial Harding, warm with Christmas cheer, writes on behalf of himself and his wife ("the Duchess" he calls her, "she's a regular female Santa Claus") to a couple, sending Christmas gifts. "Things are not half bad," Harding writes. "You might be dead, or worse, in politics... The book and booze are for the Colonel. I wonder which he will like best. The Duchess says the book will last the longer. Great head, hasn't she? I fancy he will enjoy both." He signs on behalf of himself and his wife, as "Hardings," and underneath adds "Rooting and Grunting and glad."
