A PALMYRENE LIMESTONE BUST OF A WOMAN
CIRCA LATE 2ND-EARLY 3RD CENTURY A.D.
From a funerary relief, the deceased depicted wrapped in a mantle over a tunic, veiled over her head and pinned at her left shoulder, the circular brooch with three pendant tassels, her left elbow bent, holding the folds of the drapery, her fingers extended, two rings on her pinky, her right arm raised, the hand curved around the edge of the veil, a decorative diadem across her forehead, her hair rolled back and bound in a twisted cloth, a single wavy tress falling onto her right shoulder, her round face with a prominent chin, her sharp brows above large lidded almond-shaped eyes, the irises and pupils incised, her fleshy lips pursed, with dangling earrings, an inscription above her left shoulder, reading: "Alas! Ella daughter of Nema son of Marya Hass, wife of Mala son of Yamla Zabid"
