A ROMAN MARBLE MOSAIC PANEL
CIRCA 3RD CENTURY A.D.
Preserving the border from one side of a large floor, with elaborate floral scrolling on a black ground, with a head in the corner, perhaps a personification of Summer, surrounded by overgrown acanthus leaves, berries and buds, to the right two deer leaping through the scrolling pursued by a nude Eros, his wings outstretched, aiming his flexed bow at the animals, each deer already wounded, blood dripping from the piercing arrows, the deer to the left collapsing, framed by plain white and ochre bands
