LAURO, Giacomo (ca 1583-1650). Antiquae urbis splendor. Rome: Vitale Mascardi, 1612-1613-1615-1628 [dedication dated 1637].
4 parts in one volume, oblong 4o (220 x 312 mm). Engraved title, dedication leaf, portraits of Pope Urban VIII and Sigismund III Vasa, and 165 plates (title-page and some leaves reinforced along gutter, some minor marginal soiling). 17th-century mottled calf gilt, spine gilt (some wear, a few chips at spine ends and edges with some loss, front joint cracked).
A fine series of early views of Rome, much reprinted and issued in various combinations of plates, titles and dedications. Lauro was well-known for his illustrations of Rome, in particular for this work and his Heroico Splendore della Citta de Mondo published in 1642, which had 50 views and plans of Rome. Cf.
