By repute, the present pair of vases were the property of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, the third child of Nicholas I. Olga was born in St Petersburg on the 30th August 1822. On the 26th July 1846 she married Prince Carl Würtemberg. Since they did not have any children, the majority of her dowry, including her belongings, were bequeathed to her relatives and closest friends. The Grand Duchess Olga died on the 30th October 1892 and was buried in the Old Palace of Stuttgart.

For a similar pair of vases made by the Imperial Porcelain Factory from the same period, also from the Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna's property, see: the 56th auction 'Herman Historica Munchen', 10th October 2008, lot 1038.
