Intended for the Farm Palace in the Alexandria Park in Peterhoff, the Banqueting Service with the monogram 'A' was completed 1840-1841 upon the order of Nicholas I for his elder son and heir to the throne, the Grand Duke Alexander, the future Tsar Alexander II. The Service included dinner, dessert and tea sets, intended for a hundred and twenty five people, the entire Service amounting to 3300 pieces.
Additional pieces were produced after the coronation of the Emperor Alexander II and replacements continued to be produced.
The present lot is one of the original pieces.
