Lot Essay

Driving horses along country roads was a frequent theme for Munnings and he repeated the scenes under varying climatic conditions. Here, probably Fred Gray drives a small herd, but the focus is really the ambient vapour and the damp and bitterness of the day. Although Munnings painted numerous images of rainy conditions, as he painted on the spot it is no wonder there are few depicting snow.
