ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE DE MARÉES, circa 1750

Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria with a white-powdered curly wig and black wig-bag, wearing a silvered breast-plate over a blue velvet coat, an orange coat draped over his left shoulder, decorated with the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the breast-star and white-edged blue moiré silk sash of the Bavarian Order of Saint-George; cloudy sky and foliage background; on vellum, rectangular -- 45 x 62 mm, fine cast ormolu frame with ribbon-tie and foliage surmount.

Lot Essay

Maximilian III Joseph of Wittelsbach (1727 Munich - 1777 Munich) succeeded his father, Emperor Charles VII of the Holy Roman Empire, as Elector of Bavaria in 1745, recognizing Empress Maria-Theresia's (see lot 131) rights on the Holy Roman Empire. Like his father, he was an important patron of the Arts.
