Heaton Hall, near Manchester, was the seat of the Egerton family. The park, laid out by William Emes in the style of Capability Brown, was often used for public events, including Heaton Park races. Established by Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton in 1827, the races were run on a course in the grounds until 1839, when they were moved to Aintree, near Liverpool, now the site of the infamous Grand National.
