A fine and important miniature depicting the Princesse de Vaudémont-Lorraine standing in a Louis XVI interior, her right hand clasping a flowing long black silk veil draped over her high-piled curly powdered hair, wearing a white satin dress with pink silk bodice and skirt, a green-upholstered gilt-wood sofa in the background, to the right a wooden guéridon decorated with a vase of flowers, the floor with an Aubusson carpet; rectangular -- 175 x 114 mm, gilt-metal frame.

An old inscription on the reverse of the frame reads "Princesse de Vaudémont Lorraine née Montmorency Son salon fut célèbre sous le 1r. Empire et la Restauration, et assiduement (sic) fréquenté par Talleyrand, Narbonne etc. Elle fit don de cette miniature à mon arrière-grand-oncle (et frère adoptif) Monsieur Orfila, doyen de la faculté de Médecine. E[...] Douglas du "Sérail" de Talleyrand".

The Prince de Vaudémont-Lorraine, a son of the Comtesse de Brionne, was the brother of the Prince de Lambesc, notorious for his slaughter in the Tuileries garden during the French Revolution.
