Lot Essay

Charles of Habsburg (1771-1847), Archduke of Austria, was a son of Emperor Leopold II and a brother of Emperor Francis II (see lots 118 and 229). He joined the Order of the Teutonic Knights in 1801, nearly immediately became Grand Master but handed his appointment over to his brother Anton Victor in 1804 and left the Teutonic Order. An excellent warrior, he is famous for his victory over Napoleon at Aspern in 1809. In 1815, he married Princess Henriette of Nassau-Weilburg. A miniature depicting the Archduke in an identical uniform is illustrated in Karen Schaffers-Bodenhausen and Marieke Tiethoff-Spliethoff, The Portrait Miniatures in the Collections of the House of Nassau-Orange, Zwolle, 1993, p. 190, nr 172.
