Such pietre dure panels were mainly produced in Rome and in the Medici workshops, the Opificio delle pietre dure, founded in 1588 by Grand Duke Ferdinand I de Medici. These panels were sought after by a growing clientèle of wealthy patrons and foreign connoisseurs on their Grand Tour. These panels were often fitted to important in cabinets or caskets, as the present panel would have been.
