Roger Vandercruse ('RVLC'), dit Lacroix, maître in 1755.
One of the most celebrated ébénistes of the 18th Century, Lacroix is known for the variety of his productions and the large spectrum, both in style, shapes and techniques, covered by his oeuvre. Among the many 'meubles à transformation' executed by Lacroix, several tables d'accouchée such as this one are recorded. These delicate and graceful pieces, which count amongst the chefs-d'oeuvre of the ébéniste are characterized by a removable upper section inlaid with stylized foliage or geometric motifs, itself fitted with an adjustable writing panel and mirror, flanked by further compartments, and sitting atop a conformingly-shaped stand. Several closely related examples by the ébéniste are illustrated in J. Nicolay, L'Art et la Manière des Maîtres Ebénistes Français au XVIIIè Siècle, Paris, 1956, p.235 and figs. AB, AC, AD and AE. Amongst the few tables d'accouchée sold at auction, a related example was sold at Christie's, Monaco, 12 December 1999, lot 888, while a further d'accouchée by Germain Landrin (maître in 1738) was, more recently, sold at Christie's, Paris, 25 June 2008, lot 279.
