Lot Essay

Henri Clouzot (Dictionnaire des miniaturistes sur émail, Paris, 1924, p. 130) quotes the Almanach des Beaux-Arts for 1754 where Liot is mentioned as one of the best Parisian enamellers, who worked almost exclusively for goldsmiths. Liot's workshop was situated opposite the Saint-Merry church.
A gold snuff-box by Jean Ducrollay of 1753-1754 enamelled by Liot is illustrated in Serge Grandjean, Les tabatières du musée du Louvre, Paris, 1981, nr. 98 (as Liot's only work hitherto recorded).
The case is marked with the Paris date-mark for 1757-1758, with the charge and discharge marks of the sous-fermier Eloy Brichard.
