Lot Essay

Egmond-aan-Zee, on the north sea coast to the west of Alkmaar in Holland, is identifiable by its church with its distinctive tower, which survived until 1743, when it was engulfed by the sea. It was painted by Jacob van Ruisdael among others, now in the National Gallery, London.
