Lot Essay

After the picture of c.1772, in a Private Collection, which according to Wildenstein (1960), was made into an oval by F.T. Sabin in 1927, and was likely to have been painted as part of a decorative ensemble intended to hang as an overdoor (see J.-P. Cuzin, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, New York, 1988, no. 237).
