Lot Essay

The present sheet, which is probably a design for a wall decoration, is closely comparable to two other drawings by Castello, each showing two seated figures: Two Kings of Judah: Josiah and Hezekiah, in the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. 1922.5681) and Two prophets: Ezekial and Daniel, in the Museo Nazionale, Palermo. A variant of the present drawing, again showing Saints John and Luke in pendentives, is in the Kunsthalle in Bremen (inv. 37/166).
