Lot Essay

Varley first visited Beddgelert on a tour of North Wales with J. C. Barrow in 1798 or 1799, and after that date executed many idealised views of it, exhibiting them at the Old Water-Colour Society in 1805, 1810, 1812, 1815 and 1834. At least eight other versions are known.
