Early issue without the chart of the Strait of Magellan and the directions to the binder; -- [Second Voyage]. COOK, James. A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World. Cadell 1784. 3 vols., 4° (275x215mm), and 2° (523x378mm). 24 engraved plates in the text volumes and 63 engraved plates in the atlas, complete without the 'Death of Cook' plate sometimes found bound into some copies. (Overall a very few leaves with neatly repaired tears, and very occasional light staining, one leaf with the top margin repaired and with small loss in the headline.) Together 11 volumes uniformly bound in richly-gilt red morocco by Aquarius.

FIRST EDITIONS, with the very rare atlas format of the plates for the First and Second Voyages. 'In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors together had done. He was the first really scientific navigator, and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge' (Hill). 'Captain James Cook's exploration of the eastern coast marks the beginning of a new era in the history of Australia'. (Edward Jenks, The Great Events, vol. XVII, p.238).
