10 parts in 1 volume, large 2° (515 x 352mm). 10 engraved titles heightened in red and gold, 3 mezzotint portraits of Trew, G. D. Ehret and J. J. Haid, 100 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES AFTER GEORG DIONYSIUS EHRET by Johann Jacob Haid, each with the first word of caption highlighted in gold. (Light cockling of outer and upper edges, the red ink on the fourth title slightly smudged, one portrait slightly spotted, very occasional negligible soiling.) Contemporary English diced russia gilt (very light wear, light spotting on endpapers).
A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREATEST 18TH-CENTURY BOTANICAL COLOUR-PLATE BOOKS. Ehret's matchless plates, according to Hunt, achieve 'realism, majesty, ineffable color, all in one breathtaking look'. This copy is apparently an early issue, without the general title issued in about 1773, but with all the parts titles. This work received extravagant and richly-deserved contemporary praise, with no less an authority than Linnaeus himself writing to Trew that 'the miracles of our century in the natural sciences are your work of Ehret's plants, Edwards' work of birds and Roesel's of insects, nothing equal was seen in the past and will be in the future' (quoted in Gerta Calmann, Ehret Flower Painter Extraordinary, 1977, p. 97). Trew died before the text of the last three parts was written and before the illustrations of parts IX and X were printed. The work was completed by Benedict Christian Vogel, Professor of Botany at the University of Altdorf.
