Lot Essay

Related wares in the J. Pierpont Morgan Collection are illustrated and discussed in Linda H. Roth and Clare Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth-Century Porcelain at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Wadsworth, 2000, pp. 184-190, cat. nos. 86-8; the present bowl may have originally formed part of the service in the Collection (cat. no. 87).

See also Adrian Sassoon, Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, Catalogue of the Collections, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 1991, pp. 39-41, cat. no. 8. Both publications discuss the production of wares from 1759-61 - described in factory records with 'rose et verd' grounds - with particular reference to a sale conducted at Versailles in December 1760 at which Louis XV purchased a grand déjeuner Hebert and another déjeuner bought by the marchand-mercier Dulac in the Spring of 1761. Other similar wares are listed by Linda Roth and Clare Le Corbeiller, ibid., pp. 187-188, and another cup and saucer similar was sold at Christie's, New York, 18 October 2002, lot 404.
