Lot Essay

'These are pages from a sketchbook begun in the early part of 1941 when Lucian Freud was working as an ordinary Seaman on board the S.S. Baltrover, a cargo vessel chartered for Atlantic crossings. The other drawings in the sketchbook were done later that year on his return to the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Hadleigh in Suffolk, where he had been working previously with Cedric Morris' (Exhibition catalogue, Lucian Freud Pages from a Sketchbook of 1941, London, Anthony d'Offay, 1974, intro.).

The d'Offay show opened to coincide with the Lucian Freud Retrospective at the Hayward Gallery.
