The present work depicts Johnny Briggs, who is best known for his role as Mike Baldwin in Coronation Street (1976-2006). Mr. Briggs ended his National Service in the army on 17th November 1955. In December 1955, he met up with his friend Ruskin Spear who asked him whether Mr. Briggs would sit for him. Briggs agreed and sat for Spear five times. When the portrait had been completed, Ruskin Spear told Briggs that when he could afford to buy the picture he should let him know.
Finally, in 1985, Johnny Briggs purchased the work.
