Lot Essay

Robin Spencer writes of Paolozzi's interest and exploration of heads in his sculpture and collages:
'The head, whether by a Greek or African Artist, has an even more compelling presence when overlaid in collage by a twentieth-century machine image. In early collages of the 1940s, machine parts are superimposed on images of Greek sculpture' (R. Spencer, Eduardo Paolozzi: Recurring Themes, London, 1984, p. 21).
