Lot Essay

In addition to their Tudor Street address, W. Priest is recorded at 23 Great Charlotte Street and 17 and 24 Water St, Blackfriars between 1837-1839. Much of the furniture marked dates from c. 1790 to the mid-Victorian period, indicating that Priest was most likely a dealer or retailer (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 717). Similar labels and stamps which feature on the present piece are illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 384, figs. 753 & 754.
