3 volumes, 8o (186 x 127 mm). Half-titles, 2-page advertisement for "New Novels" at end of volume 2. Frontispiece map in volume 1, additional copy of the map tipped-in between N7 and N8 in volume 2. (Some occasional pale spotting, title-page of volume 1 with small loss at upper margin, S6 in volume 1 with slight marginal loss not affecting text.) Original brown cloth, front covers blocked in black, double-rule border in blind on rear covers, gilt-lettered on spine (slight wear at edges and joints, rear hinge of volume 3 cracked, covers slightly cocked ). Provenance: T. Fuller-Riggs (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, FIRST ISSUE, lacking the single quotation mark after "A Pair of Blue Eyes" on the title-page of first volume, FIRST BINDING, with double-rule border on back covers. The Return of the Native was first printed serially in Belgravia from January to December 1878; several chapters were retitled, and numerous deletions and additions were made before it was published in book form in an edition of 1,000 copies.
