The Robe Volante was a French fashion of the early 18th century, much beloved by painters and ladies alike for the ability to show off the large patterned silks of the 1720s and 1730s.

Compare Victoria & Albert Museum Number T.87-1920, illustrated in Patterns of Fashion, Janet Arnold, Volume 1, p.34 & 35, for a similar robe with larger cuffs dated to 1745-50,

Compare Modes en Mirroir, Musée Galliera, Paris, page 112, Figure 5 for a similar robe.
