Contemporary Italian quarter mottled sheep, later decorated boards, morocco spine labels (some wear to spines, lacking vol. 3 spine label). Provenance: Carleton R. Richmond (sold Sotheby Parke Bernet, 30 October 1981, lot 44).

A FINE COPY OF ZATTA'S IMPORTANT WORLD ATLAS. Zatta began issuing copies of his atlas in 1774 with double-page engraved titles. Later issues, as here, contain a single-page engraved title. One of the finest "modern" comprehensive world atlases to be issued in Italy in the 18th century. The maps include a series based on Mitchell's important map of America on 12 sheets (vol. 4), a suite of Europe maps, county maps of Kent, Middlesex, Essex and Surrey, and various maps of Africa, Asia, Australasia, and of the Ancient world. Those of Australasia follow Cook's contemporary reports on the latest discoveries. Cf. Phillips, Atlases, 650-1. Sabin 106276. (4)
