4 volumes, 2o (385 x 262 mm). Each volume with engraved allegorical title, engraved armorial head-piece in vol. I, initial and tail-piece vignette, the preface with engraved head- and tail-piece and initial and tailpiece vignette on final leaf; 218 hand-colored double-page engraved maps and views, mounted on guards. (A few small marginal tears, last map in vol. 4 with some dampstaining at lower corner, some occasional light marginal browning.) Contemporary Italian quarter mottled sheep, later decorated boards, morocco spine labels (some wear to spines, lacking vol. 3 spine label). Provenance: Carleton R. Richmond (sold Sotheby Parke Bernet, 30 October 1981, lot 44).
A FINE COPY OF ZATTA'S IMPORTANT WORLD ATLAS. Zatta began issuing copies of his atlas in 1774 with double-page engraved titles. Later issues, as here, contain a single-page engraved title. One of the finest "modern" comprehensive world atlases to be issued in Italy in the 18th century. The maps include a series based on Mitchell's important map of America on 12 sheets (vol. 4), a suite of Europe maps, county maps of Kent, Middlesex, Essex and Surrey, and various maps of Africa, Asia, Australasia, and of the Ancient world.
