Half-title. 23 plates including 13 colored (one folding) and one uncolored aquatint, 9 line-engravings (3 folding), one folding engraved plan of Moscow, and two wood-engravings in text. Contemporary half calf, gilt spine (some light wear to joints and spine ends). Provenance: D.E.W. (initials at foot of spine); Edward Francis Hutton (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. With fine hand-colored aquatint views of the Kremlin by Edward Finden after Lavrof and a folding panorama (261 x 440 mm) which gives a "general front view" of the palace from the river Moskva. The text itself is very detailed, a reflection of the fact that Lyall lived in Russia, practising as a young doctor after graduating in medicine at Edinburgh. The subject matter includes a catalogue of plants found near Moscow, as well as an essay on the progress of Russian architecture. Abbey Travel 227.
