8o (193 x 118 mm). Engraved armorial frontispiece, 14 engraved plates by S. Gribelin, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials, letterpress table, 2 advertisement leaves. (Very occasional light spotting or browning, not affecting plates.) Contemporary calf gilt with later gilt-lettered label (some rubbing to joints and extremities). Provenance: Joseph Pickford (1734-1782), English architect (armorial bookplate).

The second, enlarged and revised edition of Beverley's work on Virginia, comprising a history of the first settlement and its government, a description of its natural resources and the "Native Indians," and an appraisal of "The present State of the Country ... the Polity of the Government, and the Improvements of the Land." With 14 "fine engravings" (Sabin) by Gribelin, copied from De Bry's Latin edition of Hariot's Admiranda Narratio. The preface was rewritten for this edition; the author's name appears on p. 72. The present copy is part of the issue that omits B. and S. Tooke from the imprint. Church 885; Howes B-410; Sabin 5113.
