FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Chastellux served as an officer under Rochambeau, under whom he travelled throughout New England and Pennsylvania, and was even a guest of Jefferson. His observations on life in the United States were very popular: before 1790, ten editions had been printed in three languages after the first edition in French of 1786. Sabin 12229; Howes C-324.
