A FINE GOLD, ENAMEL AND GEMSET SNUFF-BOX
marked Fabergé, workmaster Michael Perchin, St. Petersburg, circa 1880, with scratched inventory number 59391, the enamel plaque 18th Century, possibly by De Mailly

Octagonal, each side enamelled in translucent golden yellow over a striped moiré ground bordered by blue enamelled entrelac bands and white pellets, the cover set with an oval enamel plaque painted en grisaille with putti and a goat on a blue ground simulating lapis lazuli within a rose-cut diamond frame - 6.2 cm long

Lot Essay

The painted enamel plaque is possibly by Charles Jacques de Mailly (1740-1817) who worked both in France and Russia specializing in enamels for the decoration of snuff-boxes. In 1775 he executed a portrait of Pugatschoff and it is possible that his portrait of Catherine II was painted in the same year. The style of the box is in keeping with French 18th Century snuff-boxes decorated with such plaques.
