Lot Essay

The Dormouse and The Doctor was written by A.A. Milne and published in his much loved 1924 collection of poetry When We Were Very Young. It was originally illustrated by Milne's regular illustrator Ernest Howard Shepard. Here, Harry Rountree takes the second half of the poem and incorporates his own charming drawings which depict, in a departure from Shepard's more literal images, both characters as mice in human clothing, heightening the comedy of the poem.
