Lot Essay

The Luohans are also known as Arhats, 'Destroyers of the passions', or 'Worthiness'. They are Buddha's apostles, probably originated in Kashmir. They were first mentioned as sixteen Arhats in the Mahayanavataraka, which was translated into Chinese in AD 437.
Compare with a set of eighteen ivory luohans sold in these Rooms, 10 June 2009, lot 145.
