Lot Essay

Such horns are very simple and in the same time very refined. Fashioned as a segment of a thick tree trunk, it is enhanced by the exquisite prunus branch. Comparable examples are illustrated in T. Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, p.163, pl.112 ; and in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Books Ltd., London 1999, p.169, pls.214 and 215.
