De forme circulaire, orné au centre d'un médaillon aux contours en forme de ruyi, représentant un couple d'oiseaux perché sur un branchage, des pivoines fleurissant à la base, deux petits cachets du peintre en rouge de fer, l'aile rehaussée de rinceaux fleuris sur fond jaune, de cartouches de fruits et médaillons ornés de dragons, l'ensemble sur fond de treillis losangés roses, la bordure agrémentée d'une frise de grecques, le revers de cinq grands dragons féroces, volant parmi les nuages, pourchassant la perle sacrée, le fond bleu nuit, la base émaillée jaune et rehaussée d'un phénix bleu pâle, entouré de cinq chauve-souris, le pied émaillé rose portant trois caractères gu, yue, xuan

The technical achievements in porcelain production during the Qianlong reign allowed of a great deal of experimentation at the official kilns to satisfy the Emperor's desire for innovation. One popular fashion was to simulate other materials such as lacquer, cloisonné, enamel, bronze and wood. Most of which appear to be unique examples. The reverse side of the present dish is clearly imitating Canton enamelled copper wares. Compare it with the bases of a yellow-ground enamelled copper bowls from the Fonthill collection and sold in our London Rooms, 9 November 2004, lot 18.
A number of such objects simulating other material, is in the Beijing Palace Museum and illustrated in the Kangxi Yongzheng Qianlong, Forbidden City Press, 1989, pls. 92-96, 101-106.
