Lot Essay

Compare the current example with an 18th century rhinoceros horn cup also carved with a praying mantis and illustrated in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Books Ltd., London 1999, p.240, pl.347. The author also illustrates p.166, pl.207 another cup which has a similarly carved lotus flower base.
