The inscription can be translated as follow: 'the Buddha was made in 1918 AD for the mother of the donor, to gain merit and enlightenment'
Images of the Emaciated Buddha are comparatively rare in Thai bronze sculpture and are modeled after Gandharan prototypes; compare to another large example sold at Christie's New York, 21 March 2001, lot 179.
When Prince Siddhartha renounced all worldly possessions, he meditated and endured many hardships in order to attain Enlightenment. During a period of time, while poised in total control, he allowed himself only one grain of rice per day in order to purify his body and rid himself of worldly temptations. Reaching near starvation he realized the need of the middle path exercising moderation and reached Enlightenment shortly therafter.
