Lot Essay

Although it is difficult to ascertain the exact date of this superbly carved female bust due to its fragmentary character, it seems to be possible to place it in the third quarter of the tenth century. The fine carving of her jewellery is in fact very similar to an Umamaheshvara stone image, attributed to this period and published by E. C. Bunker and D. Latchford, Adoration and Glory: The Golden Age of Khmer Art, Art Media Resources, Chicago 2004, pl. 63.
