Major Edward Antony Fitzherbert Widdrington, M.C., (1914-1944), served with the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. In early 1944 he was part of Operation Pomegranate, an SAS four-man raid on the Italian Airfield San Edigio. Only Widdrington and Lt. Quentin Hughes were able to reach the target planting bombs on seven aircraft. One of the remaining bombs detonated whilst being made safe and killed Widdrington. For his actions during this raid he was awarded a posthumous Military Cross.
