In the center a fenced garden scene showing a couple seated at a pink table set with gilt dishes while their male and female attendants observe, the wide rim enameled with scenes of elegant ladies at various pursuits including spinning, weaving, picking fruit and watching boys at play, on the back two iron-red flowering branches

Lot Essay

A nearly identical but slightly larger dish is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and illustrated by Jorg (Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, p. 210) where he notes that this characteristically muddy, early pink is found on large pieces, as "the porcelain producers were eager to show their capabilities by introducing the colour on grand objects".
