Each set on a shaped circular base, cast and chased with scrolls, flowers, and lion's masks, the putto-formed stem with shells and garlands, the urn-form socket with conforming decoration, detachable nozzle with flowers and gadrooned border, each putto's back engraved with two crests, each marked on base, socket, and one nozzle, one base apparently lacking maker's mark, also marked No. 1 and 31"6 and No. 2 and 30"10

One of the crests is for Hartstonge, co. Limerick.
The figural stem of this pair of candlesticks is based on a 1747 London model by Ernest Sieber (overstriking the mark of Lewis Pantin) which is illustrated in Arthur Grimwade, Rococo Silver: 1727-1765, 1974, pl. 75A. An Irish silver basket by William Townsend and engraved with the Hartstonge coat-of-arms was sold in these Rooms, 21 October 2003, lot 373.
