Lot Essay

The present brush back along with the following two lots in this sale are rare survivors in delftware of useful everyday objects. See Dave and Robert Aronson, Dutch Delftware 2005, Amsterdam, 2005, pp. 30-33, nos. 25-31 and Ella B. Schaap, Delft Ceramics at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2003, pp. 24-25 for other examples, each variant in form and decoration.

According to Ms. Schaap, brushes such as the present example were meant either to brush clothes or to crumb the table after a meal.
