There are eight known dated chargers of this type, depicting a standing figure of Charles II. Six of these are now held in museum collections. Of the four that closely resemble the present example, only one is dated 1662.

Following the death of Oliver Cromwell in 1658, Charles II was restored to the throne. His coronation was held in 1661. Therefore it has been suggested that the date 1662 relates to his marriage to Catherine of Braganza in May of that year.
